Stygian: Outer Gods – Action/Horror FPS RPG

After taking a good look at those games that recall the graphics and styles of the old days, today it’s our turn to see one that, not only is it visually on par with all current games, but will arrive on the market very soon, on the 14th of this very month! We’re talking about none other than Stygian: Outer Gods, developed by Misterial Games and published by Fulqrum Publishing, the latter being responsible for a good number of games, among which are, to mention some of their best known, Forgive Me Father 1 and 2.

Stygian: Outer Gods defines itself as a survival horror game with RPG elements, in which we will immerse ourselves in a hostile world that will put our existence to the test, while we unravel an ancient mystery and risk our own sanity, facing the Outer Gods with our weapons and skills. Our resources will be limited just like our ammo, so we’ll have to make every decision and every bullet count. Do you think you’ll be up to the task? Take a look at the Official Gameplay Trailer for Stygian: Outer Gods, brought to you by GameTrailers:

A Bit of Context

Stygian: Outer Gods is set in the same universe as Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, a game released in 2019 that was developed by Cultic Games and also published by Fulqrum Publishing. While Reign of the Old Ones also featured a solid Lovecraftian atmosphere based on cosmic horror, it was a classic RPG, with turn-based combat and a very particular 2D design, which, while it was visually interesting, isn’t even remotely comparable to the title we’re talking about today. Reign of the Old Ones used to transport players to the desolate, dark, and decaying city of Arkham, a place besieged by supernatural forces that transcended human understanding.

When we say classic RPG, we mean that its gameplay style and mechanics themselves would be comparable, just to give an example, to the old AD&D, Baldur’s Gate, etc. From the very beginning, we had multiple character archetypes to choose from, each with different and unique abilities, and their own backgrounds and motivations. In addition to its strong role-playing core, Reign of the Old Ones was consolidating a solid and gripping narrative, with branching dialogues and character progression, which no doubt was consolidating its strongly defined RPG genre.

Outer Gods: New Era Role-Playing

Now then, having in mind that the Stygian universe had been pre-established from before, we now focus on Outer Gods. This game allows players to witness and influence the events that preceded the Black Day, while we immerse ourselves in a unique world full of dangers, dark corners to explore, and an ancient, lurking evil that entirely escapes human understanding. We will have to accompany an old friend on her journey to the settlement of Kingsport, which is shrouded in fog, to uncover the town’s dark secrets and find her missing father.

Kingsport, the very setting of the game, its visual style and the sensations it will convey, will be completely based on the works of H. P. Lovecraft. In addition to the village, we will explore dark mines, cemeteries, misty forests, a mysterious mansion, and of course, an ancient lighthouse. Here, role-playing and survival elements will carry a lot of weight, since in every encounter we will put our own sanity to the test, which could eventually harm us more than just physical damage. Any mental affliction will affect our perception of the game and our experience, so we will have to stay alert for materials and recipes we may find to craft medicines and the tools we need to keep advancing in our journey.

Multiple Choice at Its Finest

The role-playing factor will allow us to customize our playstyle, unlocking new abilities according to our preferences. In addition, we will be able to find arcane artifacts and experiment with different ways of interacting with the environment. Because of this, at all times we will have options and multiple paths to move forward in the story, so we’ll simply have to make the decisions, and of course, then face the consequences.

Our decisions will influence the events that will unfold in the game world, giving rise to various endings. Any wrong word or action could have irreversible consequences, something we will definitely have to keep in mind. The world will react to the way we choose to develop our character, and the inhabitants and dangers of the world may respond in different ways depending on our madness level or the playstyle we have chosen.
