Flesh Made Fear: Another Return to Basics

Lately, weā€™ve brought to the page more than a few cases of games that aim to give us a glorious return to the golden age of video games, whether in one genre or another. Well, the studios Tainted Pact Games and Assemble Entertainment, both of which already have a solid list of games under their belt, have set out to make one of those returns to the roots of the survival horror genre, in the style of Phase Zero, a title we mentioned just recently. This time weā€™re talking about Flesh Made Fear, a game that could easily be compared to the first Resident Evil titles, and would undoubtedly share their glory and highly addictive gameplay.

Flesh Made Fear brings together a series of elements typical of those fantastic early survival horror titles: tank-style controls, fixed cameras, deliberately uncomfortable but effective angles when it comes to delivering us an old-school horror experience. And all that seasoned with a retro aesthetic that, while not pixel-art, does rely on textures with not too many polygons. Donā€™t get scared, theyā€™ll still be enough. Flesh Made Fear looks great, but beyond our words, you can see it for yourself below, in its Official Announcement Trailer, courtesy of IGN:

An Ode to the Fathers of Survival Horror

As said by its own developers, Flesh Made Fear doesnā€™t settle for just reviving or honoring the genre; in fact, it sets out to take its roots to new and terrifying depths, adding those mechanics we all know and love to the new technologies we have at our disposal today. In this game we will assume the role of an elite agent from the Reaper Intervention Platoon (R.I.P.), a covert special force deployed this time with the objective of neutralizing Victor Ripper, a.k.a. ā€œThe Dripper,ā€ a brilliant but disturbed former CIA agent. His sinister experiments have turned a desolate remote town into a nightmare full of grotesque monsters and mind-controlled slaves.

From the very beginning our mission is clear: we must eliminate Ripper, while unraveling the mysteries behind his chilling experiments and trying to survive the horrors lurking in his mansion turned laboratory. Before we know it, we will find ourselves immersed in a world of terrifying nightmares and occult rituals where every step we take could drag us deeper into madness. And of course, not everything will be negative, because our own intuition will be our best ally: in Flesh Made Fear we will count on survival mechanics already defined by the basics of this genre we love, and which most of us are already familiar with in one way or another, now reinvented and improved with thrilling innovations, allowing us to face our fears like never before!

These Guys Know What They’re Doing

As we mentioned earlier, Tainted Pact Games and Assemble Entertainment are by no means new to game development. In fact, several of their most popular titles are precisely from the horror genre. Weā€™re talking about games like Massacre at the Mirage, Suffer the Night and Terror at Oakheart, just to name a few, although I personally remember them fondly for their game FAR: Lone Sails (2018), or some of the classic Leisure Suit Larry titles from earlier years. In this case, their goal is a full-fledged homage to the beginnings of the survival horror genre.

Flesh Made Fear pays a respectful tribute to the PSX-era survival horror that defined a generation. Inspired by the original Resident Evil trilogy, it cleverly combines intricate puzzles, intense combat, and a terrifying atmosphere. But itā€™s not all about a nostalgic return to the past; in this title we will experience the result of a bold evolution: modernized controls, immersive cinematics, and a captivating story that will undoubtedly keep us on the edge of our seats until the very end.
