PS Plus Essential: August 2025 Games

Lies of P

Inspired by the classic tale of Pinocchio, this soulslike transports the player to Krat, a Belle Époque-style city plunged into decay after a puppet rebellion and a disease that petrifies people. You play as P, a humanoid puppet created by Geppetto, who wakes up alone and with no memories, facing relentless enemies in search of his truth. The moral decisions, focused on lying or telling the truth, directly affect the protagonist’s evolution and unlock different endings, adding narrative depth to a story filled with tension and mystery.

Combat is demanding and technical, with an emphasis on blocking, dodging and counterattacking. The weapon customization system lets you combine blades and handles to create unique fighting styles, while the interchangeable mechanical arm grants special abilities like flamethrowers or grappling hooks. The gothic atmosphere, challenging bosses and interconnected level design create an immersive and rewarding experience. Its dark tone and the blend of classic tale and industrial horror make it a unique offering in the soulslike genre.

DayZ

Set in a fictional region of Eastern Europe devastated by a virus, this online survival game puts the player in the role of a lone survivor, forced to explore a massive open world where almost everything is a threat. From hunger and thirst to illnesses, injuries or extreme weather conditions, the environment itself is hostile. But the biggest danger comes from other players, who might cooperate, ignore you or eliminate you for your resources. There’s no guided story or on-screen help: the only mission is to survive as long as possible with whatever you find, build or steal.

Realism is one of its pillars: each decision can be the difference between life and death. You can hunt, collect water, repair vehicles, build bases or trade, but you can also risk it all in a fight over a backpack. The game favors immersion through its constant tension and mechanics like proximity voice chat or interaction gestures. Updates have expanded its content with additional maps, contaminated zones, improvised weapons and advanced survival tools, reinforcing its raw, unforgiving and deeply unpredictable survival experience.

My Hero One’s Justice 2

Based on the popular anime My Hero Academia, this open arena fighting game pits heroes and villains in spectacular battles full of special powers, combos and environmental destruction. The story resumes the events of the anime starting from the Shie Hassaikai arc, letting you relive its key moments from both the protagonists’ and the antagonists’ point of view. Each battle unfolds with animations faithful to the anime’s style and a narrative that progresses between illustrated panels and action scenes. In addition to story mode, it includes arcade challenges, special missions and both local and online fights.

The combat system is accessible yet flashy, ideal for anime fans looking for a straightforward experience. You can choose from over 40 characters, each with unique abilities and special moves called Plus Ultra, which can be combined with team assist attacks. The arenas let you climb walls, execute combos in the air and trigger dynamic destruction events. Even though it doesn’t offer the tactical depth of more technical fighting games, it stands out for its visual style, fast pace and loyalty to the original material. It’s a title built for quick fun, with plenty of unlockable content and a strong dose of charm for those who follow the series.
