System Shock 2’s Remaster Is Free on Epic Right Now, and You Should Grab It

Stop what you are doing, because one of the greatest games ever made is
sitting in the Epic Games Store with a price tag of nothing.

The System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster is free until October 8.
Normally it is $29.99. Right now it costs us an Epic account and roughly five
minutes of our life. Go grab it, we will still be here when you get back.

Done? Good. Let’s talk about why this one matters, because this is not some
forgotten shovelware being dumped on us to pad out a Thursday. System Shock 2
came out in 1999 and it quietly rewired what games could be. This is the game
that gave us SHODAN, the AI villain who still makes our skin crawl decades
later, and it is the game whose fingerprints are smeared all over BioShock,
Dead Space and Prey. If you have ever crept down a dark corridor low on ammo,
listening to something breathe in the next room, deciding whether to fight or
just run, you have felt the DNA of this thing whether you knew its name or
not. It is an immersive sim and a horror game and a creeping panic attack, and
it holds up.

This is the Nightdive version, by the way, and that name should relax your
shoulders a little. These are the people who do exactly this kind of work,
lovingly, for a living.

It is a remaster, not a full remake, so the bones are the same. What they have
added is the good stuff. Four-player online co-op, which is a proper fix
because the original’s co-op was held together with sticky tape and prayer.
Quality-of-life passes on the controls and the inventory, so our first hour is
spent being scared instead of fighting the menus.

Four of us. One ship. SHODAN. Do the maths.

And it does not stop there. Epic is bundling Buried Stars in the same
giveaway, a $39.99 game, so the combined pile of free stuff lands at around
$69.98. That is nearly seventy quid of games for the cost of clicking a button
we have all clicked a hundred times before.

The only thing standing between us and all of this is the calendar. October 8
is the wall. Miss it and you are back to paying full whack, and you will spend
the next three months watching everyone else talk about SHODAN in the group
chat while you sit there with your hands in your pockets.

So that is the whole story. Go click the button. We mean it. The ship is
waiting.
