Silly Polly Beast: New Kind of Horror This Year
Polly is a girl who has escaped from a nightmare orphanage, only to find herself trapped in the Underworld, forced to fight her way back. Silly Polly Beast is the new action-horror adventure, with a strong narrative component, that combines side-scrolling, top-down, and third-person views. It’s currently being developed by Anji, will be published by Top Hat Studios, and is expected to launch sometime in 2025. Although its specific release date hasn’t been announced yet, you can already try out the free demo on Steam!
This project aims to stand out in many ways, from its multi-perspective gameplay to its narrative and exploration elements, both of which are strong points throughout this adventure. While Anji may be considered an indie studio, Top Hat Studios has a long list of published titles, covering multiple genres like music bullet-hell, platformers, narrative visual novels, and much more. A Different Kind of Narrative Horror Adventure
“This is the story of a girl who, by the will of fate, faced the beast, and in order to become free, she was forced to study its nature. A story-driven shooter with aggressive gunfights and terrifying monsters awaits you. How far can you go in the fight for your freedom?”
That’s how Silly Polly Beast’s description begins on its Steam page, setting the tone for an adventure that, at the very least, promises to be something different. Our unfortunate protagonist, Polly, has escaped from a nightmare orphanage, only to find herself trapped in the Underworld. In front of her lies a city engulfed in deadly mist, and more dangers than she could ever imagine. But Polly isn’t alone in this threatening environment: she carries a mist bracelet that warns her when the fog is getting too close. In addition, the Underworld is filled with strange inhabitants who, even though not all of them are against her, definitely none of them are on her side.
“Silly Polly. Stupid, silly Polly, you’ve ruined everything. Want a cracker?”
The gameplay experience combines world exploration with combat seen from side, top-down, and third-person perspectives, making this a dynamic and engaging adventure. It pulls you in with its great narrative and the empathy we feel toward the protagonist, who’s unfortunate in just about every possible way. Character progression plays a major role, as Polly can grow stronger through ancient and forbidden knowledge, learning new spells and making her journey through this inhospitable world more manageable. Here, Polly faces not only nightmare creatures but also disturbing figures from her own past, in the midst of her fight for freedom.
