The Return of a Giant

It’s been almost ten years since we saw the arrival of Dragon Age Inquisition, and our craving for a new title in this franchise will finally be satisfied very soon. The fourth installment in the saga, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, will go on sale this October 31st, and both technical and artistic details of what this promising new title will offer continue to be revealed. The creators of the game have spared no effort in bringing us the best, and they’ve publicly shared every important or innovative aspect of the game.

Recently, in an official post, more details have been shared about the different locations we’ll be able to explore, as well as what we can do in them, since, as you know, not everything in the Dragon Age universe is about combat. This means there will be puzzles, deep conversations, collectibles, and countless surprises waiting for us.

Explorable Locations

In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, we will have the freedom to explore many sites within the impressive open world, including “the Lighthouse,” a place where we can rest and spend time with our companions, each of whom will have their own room, including our character, of course. Additionally, we’ll be able to learn much more about the game’s world and its lore through countless conversations with NPCs and our companions. The “crossroads” serve as the main connection between the Lighthouse and the rest of Thedas, where the Caretaker will take us to various islands in the Veil, but where we’ll also find puzzles, secrets, and side quests.

Moreover, we’ll visit many different areas, including some iconic locations that fans of the saga have likely heard about in previous installments, but that we’ll get to discover in person for the first time in this game. Here are some of the areas that BioWare has talked about, along with new videos showcasing these places:

Arlathan Forest: Ancient magic and powerful artifacts have awakened again, and reality dissolves in the forests that once housed the heart of the Elven Empire. The Veil Jumpers, masters of ancient Elven magic, seek to stabilize the region and prevent reality from collapsing.

Hossberg Wetlands: Much of this once peaceful swamp has been consumed by the Blight. The Darkspawn roam freely through the marshes, but the Grey Wardens mount a brave defense of the last safe refuge: Lavendel.

Minrathous: Capital of the Tevinter Imperium. The Venatori spread corruption in their attempt to turn the heart of the Empire into an ally for their own dark purposes. However, the people resist, and the rebel Shadow Dragons lead the charge.

Rivain: An ancient Grey Warden fortress stands between the crystal-clear waters and lush vegetation of the Rivain coast; the Lords of Fortune consider this paradise their home. However, the servants of the gods have their own plans and threaten to turn this sanctuary into a battlefield.

Treviso: A trade city known for the beauty of its canals and the lethality of its assassins, Treviso is under Antaam occupation, a situation that doesn’t sit well with the Antivan Crows.

What Will We Find in These Places?

In addition to the visual splendor, BioWare has shared some details about what we can do in each of these places, aside from fighting and completing our main and side quests. As we explore the world, we will encounter countless people to talk to, activities to engage in, and loot that will help us upgrade our gear, as well as mysteries, secrets, and puzzles that will increase our understanding of the environment. Ancient statues, artifacts, and letters that we can read will add new entries to our codex. And of course, fast travel will be available throughout the world.

Our companions will have specific exploration abilities, providing them with new ways to interact with the world. For example, you may come across ancient Elven artifacts that Bellara can examine as you walk through Arlathan. Additionally, when the companions return to the Lighthouse, Rook will be able to use the Lily Dagger to enhance his exploration skills. And don’t be surprised to see your companions interacting with the world on their own as they explore independently.

Yes, Photo Mode

As for the new photo mode in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, we’ll have a free movement camera with tilt, focal length, and lens distortion options, as well as the ability to hide player characters, their group, enemies, and even NPCs, allowing for much freedom in capturing images. It will also come with depth of field settings, autofocus, distance, f-stop, vignette, bloom, saturation, brightness, and contrast, promising to provide plenty of opportunities for fans to create stunning compositions for social media.

Without a doubt, Dragon Age: The Veilguard promises a fresh and dazzling experience, whether you were already a fan of the saga or are new to this universe. Thedas will certainly have something to capture your attention, making you fall in love with this installment from the very first minute. And now, we kindly ask you to take a stroll through the comments and share your thoughts on this news or your fondest memories from previous installments—if you’ve made it this far, you surely have some! You know, gamer, we’ll be reading! 😉
