Morbid Metal: The Next Ultimate Hack n’ Slash

Independent developer Screen Juice will soon launch its first title, a roguelite action hack n’ slash called Morbid Metal, which, at least judging by its visuals and the gameplay it shows, could easily become the ultimate hack n’ slash of our times. Among its various features, which we will mention later, we can already highlight the ability of the main character to shapeshift into 3 other characters in real time, changing combat style, skills, and strengths, allowing you to start a combo one way and end it in a totally different one!

There isn’t much background we can tell you about this game, since not a lot of information has been officially released yet, nor its actual launch date, but they have announced that Early Access will begin next summer, which is just about two months away, so if we get access, it won’t be long before we can try it firsthand! If you want to see how good it looks for yourself, just check out the video below, courtesy of IGN:

Could This Be the New Definitive Hack n’ Slash?

It is obviously impossible not to notice some similarities here, whether with major genre icons like Devil May Cry, or some of the best examples in the sci-fi hack n’ slash branch like NieR: Automata, or even a mix of both, maybe with a touch of Biomutant, but the truth is that Morbid Metal undoubtedly looks incredible, and seems to have what it takes to shine on its own. Why are we so sure? Well, we really aren’t, it is just a humble opinion, just like you have yours 🙂

Morbid Metal presents itself as an action-packed roguelite in which we will be able to shapeshift in real time between 4 different characters, all with unique active abilities and their own attack styles, blending traits from one and another in the middle of the same combo. We will have to make our way through hordes of enemies and powerful bosses, across stunning semi-procedurally generated environments that range from desolate wastelands of the far future to the very ruins of humanity.

We can expect fast-paced, high-octane action combat, with dozens of stylish moves to wreak havoc among our enemies. With just a button press, we will transform into one of the pre-selected characters from a roster of lethal warriors at our disposal, each with their own move sets, active abilities, and of course, a distinctive special skill. These abilities will offer a very unique synergy, allowing them to combine for powerful combos against endless deadly machines, carving our path through awesome and challenging levels.

Obviously, a character progression system can’t be missing here: we will be able to upgrade our characters and make them stronger and stronger, but watch out! Death is closer here than in other games, and if it catches us, we will have to start over. We will unlock weapons and characters that can be permanently powered up to become stronger and stronger, and finally unveil the mystery of this new and deadly world.
