WitchHunter.EXE – A Haunted Text Adventure
The meme from The Simpsons comes to mind, the one where Grandpa Abe stands in front of a group of kids and tells them something like: “You’re probably too young to know this, but back in my day, videogames didn’t hold our hands by putting icons all over our screens. Instead, we had to type what we wanted to do, or choose between text options to keep going…” Well, very soon indie studio Noé Dundas will announce the release of WitchHunter.exe, a videogame that will invite us back to those times, with a few modern touches that add a unique twist.
Its supernatural mystery story will place us in an old rural town where the inquisition seeks to judge and condemn those accused of witchcraft. However, even the inquisition can make mistakes, especially when forces far beyond our understanding whisper in our ears… or write on our screens. Yes, exactly as you read it. Can you imagine it? Then do not. Below these lines you can watch the Official Announcement Trailer for WitchHunter.exe, courtesy of GameTrailers on YouTube:
A Cursed Text Adventure Taken to a New Level
WitchHunter.exe draws inspiration from the dungeon text adventure games of the 1980s, where we explored the world by entering commands into our terminal. Here we will do exactly that, either by typing the commands ourselves, which always feels far more immersive, or by selecting them from the available options inside the retro interface. And no, do not worry, we will not need to memorize or guess commands. The only thing we will need to watch out for are the whispers or demands of the Devil himself!

This is an interactive horror game set in a small rural town plagued by madness, magic and murder. In the role of the local priest, we will attempt to exorcize the terrible darkness looming over the town by investigating suspected witches and bringing them to trial, eventually sending them to the Devil himself. It will be up to us to decide who is innocent and who will face the fire at the stake, exploring branching paths and uncovering the root of the evil while interrogating the villagers and deciding each person’s fate. Not everyone will be guilty, and not everyone will be innocent.
Just as the Devil whispers in your ear, he will also be present behind some of the town’s inhabitants. Fear and distrust will fill them with paranoia and hostility, and few will willingly submit to our interrogation, meaning we will need to choose our responses carefully in order to obtain results, whatever they may be.

And before we finish, we have to mention the remarkable level of immersion achieved when the game interface constantly breaks the fourth wall, allowing the Devil himself to send messages directly to our console, and even trigger critical errors within the program, making us question the stability of our system… or even our own perc▒ption of reality. WitchHunter.exe will constantly invite us to question what surrounds us, or even the way we interact with the wo… @#▒%!&#?
