Mystery House: A Chilling New Adventure TBA

The new studio Guillotine Games invites us to embark on a chilling journey of exploration, mystery, and horror, both in first and third person, where we’ll have to solve complex puzzles, and every decision we make could be our last. That’s how Mystery House is presented on Steam, a game that, from the very beginning, has managed to capture our attention, perhaps mainly due to its artistic style, blending retro aesthetics with modern features.

If we mention its retro aesthetic, this is no accident, but rather a respectful and intentional tribute to the revolutionary 1980 classic Mystery House, developed by Roberta Williams as the first title from On-Line Systems, which would later become none other than Sierra Online. That game went down in history as the starting point of what would later be known as the graphic adventure genre. Guillotine Games has chosen a very high pedestal to pay tribute to, and we believe they will pull it off. A Tribute to the Founder of a Genre

Mystery House invites us to dive into the shadows of a creepy abandoned mansion, in what starts as a nostalgic game night among seven friends, and quickly turns into a harsh nightmare. It turns out this mansion is not just any house, nor a mere relic from the past, but quite the opposite, a twisted place whose walls hide many secrets, and whose rooms are filled with cryptic puzzles.

The game doesn’t take long to make it clear that something, or someone, doesn’t want us to leave alive. To survive, we’ll have to wander through the dark hallways of this place, and we’ll be able to choose either third-person or first-person view, which will often enhance our immersion level. Here, every door we open or every gloomy corner could bring us closer to the truth, or fatally seal our fate.

Mystery House aims to be more than a simple homage, it offers a descent into a wonderfully twisted 3D world where the line between game and real danger gets blurry, and we’ll only get through it using our sharp minds. We’ll play as the grandson of a legendary detective, who’s been invited to what seems like an innocent night among friends, but that will soon turn into a journey of discovering a legacy that refuses to stay buried.

The game fades. The fun ends. The danger is real and tangible, and it wants us dead.

Some Features Highlighted by its Developers

  • Choose Your View of the Nightmare: Seamlessly shift between immersive first-person and strategic third-person perspectives. Each angle reveals different truths, and dangers, hidden within the mansion’s shadowy halls.
  • A Legacy Unearthed: Inspired by the original Mystery House, this reimagining weaves a deeper, modern narrative, complete with voice acting and cinematic moments that draw you into a tale of secrets, betrayal, and survival.
  • Every Room Tells a Story: Step inside a richly detailed 3D world where every creaking floorboard, flickering light, and forgotten object adds to the chilling atmosphere of the estate.
  • Mind Over Terror: Put your logic and detective instincts to the test with intricate puzzles that don’t just challenge you, they evolve with the story and deepen the mystery.
  • Touch the Past: Interact with relics, notes, and artifacts throughout the mansion. Some may hold clues… others, only warnings.
  • Sound That Follows You: A haunting, dynamic soundtrack composed by award winning composer Dan Policar (The Crimson Diamond) shapes itself to your experience, building tension, guiding emotion, and breathing life into every dark corridor.
  • A Virtual Reality Experience: An immersive experience for all your senses when you put on your PC connected VR headset.
  • Uncover Every Corner: Explore the mansion at your own pace, searching through forgotten rooms, hidden passages, and long-sealed spaces. Every shadow hides a clue. Every drawer could reveal the truth, or something worse.
  • Tools of Survival: Collect, inspect, and combine key items using a streamlined inventory system designed to blend seamlessly into your investigation. Sometimes the smallest object is the key to escape.
  • Your Choices Shape the Nightmare: Every decision matters. With multiple endings shaped by the clues you find and the paths you choose, each playthrough offers new twists, new truths, and new terrors.

So…

Mystery House promises to honor the classic from the 1980s in grand style, as we’ve said, the father of an entire genre, and it intends to do so in the best possible way. While it doesn’t have an official release date yet, we hope it will be announced very soon. In the meantime, you can head to its Steam page, which you’ll obviously find at the bottom of this article, and add it to your Wishlist so you don’t miss any news about it.
