Ah, horror. That genre without which more than 90% of gamers worldwide would feel incomplete. You know I’m right, don’t you? In fact, it is statistically likely that you are part of that 90%, just like me, of course. That is why it is always a pleasure to bring these kinds of hidden gems to the page, in this case, one in particular that shares similarities with a franchise that is now considered iconic, and you will surely agree with me as soon as you watch the trailer below. The reference in question is Outlast, and the game I bring you today is Bloodmoored, the first title from the indie studio Stormdrill, set to launch at some point in 2027.
Bloodmoored is a first person psychological horror game where we will play as Anna, a young woman who will try to escape from an old industrial complex. To do that, we will have to solve puzzles using machinery and interacting with different objects. We will need to search for answers to understand what happened there, while also dealing with different spirits that will torment us, but whose release could be key to our survival. The events that took place there were highly disturbing, and we will witness them in graphic detail. Horror in the Industrial Complex
Anna, the protagonist of this story, will find herself trapped in the industrial complex inherited from her father, and she will have to escape at all costs to survive. But of course, in this kind of story, no seemingly abandoned place is what it appears to be, right? Of course not. The solitude of this eerie place will be nothing but an illusion, as we will encounter many ghosts within the vast complex, and despite what we might think at first glance, not all of them will have hostile intentions. In many cases, their release could be the key to our precious survival.
The narrative will be based on ambiguity: some specters may become allies, while others will be driven by rage and despair. Stormdrill explained it this way: “Ghosts of the past, trapped between life and death, will be lost in their own memories, oscillating between anger and despair. One moment they may hunt you, and the next they may be the key to your survival. Each ghost will have its own story and unique behavior. Who they were in life will shape how you must face them.”
Beyond the supernatural, Bloodmoored will emphasize puzzle design that takes advantage of the decaying industrial environment. Rusted machines and deteriorating infrastructure will become part of a larger challenge that will require logic, observation, and experimentation. There will be physical, logistical, and spatial challenges, all integrated into the exploration of the gloomy complex. The result will be an experience that combines an oppressive atmosphere, fragmented narrative, and clever problem solving mechanics.
As we delve into the complex’s past, we will discover a deep story about guilt, cruelty, and consequences that will endure long after death. The presence or even the mere sight of specters trapped throughout the different rooms will surprise us constantly, making the game’s mechanics evolve constantly, requiring a high level of adaptation in every situation. As mentioned before, we highlight its similarities to Outlast, to name at least one reference, and to be clear, we see this as a positive.
