Shadowglass: From Viral Video To Reality
Some time ago, an AI generated video began circulating on X and Reddit. It lasted only a few seconds and apparently showed a game with a very retro aesthetic, an FPS in the style of 90s games, comparable to the old Heretic, with prerendered backgrounds and a kind of 3D that felt almost magical and at the same time legendary. The character carried a torch in his left hand and a sword in his right hand, and was moving along a path through an open field. In the distance you could see more countryside, the surrounding forests and a castle barely wrapped in the mountain mist. Can you imagine it? Well, don’t. Below you can see exactly what I mean:
The thing is, after that video circulated widely, indie developer Starhelm Studios has gotten to work to turn into reality what so many users across social media have been asking for: to transform that small viral video into a completely real and functional game. The best part? Project Shadowglass has nothing to do with AI in its development. As explicitly stated by its creators, the game is being built entirely by hand, and everything that can be seen in the trailer you are about to see has been executed 100% in real time on the game engine. A Viral Wish from the Gaming Community Becomes Reality
Okay, what do we have here? An immersive simulator centered on stealth, in the same style as some classics from the 90s, like the iconic Thief (1998). In it we will plan daring heists and infiltrate forbidden places while trying to escape with valuable artifacts. Project Shadowglass aims to be a love letter to the classic simulators mentioned earlier, and it is being developed with a unique 3D pixel art technology that, from what we have seen so far, already looks fantastic.

In this story we will play as a thief who is in trouble and is contacted by an anonymous source to “acquire” ancient artifacts hidden throughout the kingdom. To succeed we will have to rely completely on our ingenuity and our tools in order to carry out seemingly impossible heists. During the day we will plan our moves in our humble apartment in the slums, improve our equipment, and carry out “reconnaissance” tasks by exploring the locations of our upcoming targets.
At night everything will change. The streets and the royal castle corridors will be constantly patrolled by guards, so we will have to act without being seen if we want to succeed in our plans. We must keep in mind at all times that this thief we play as is not a warrior, and that he will always be alone, somewhat vulnerable, and certainly outnumbered and weaker. Here, every person we encounter will have a name, a personality, and their own memories, which means that a single misstep could force us to run for our lives, into combat, or even into hiding for days.

The Plot (Steam description)
In a lush, dark, and oppressive seaside kingdom, the richest nobles have fallen in line with a new king promising them more. The poor grow poorer, the rich grow richer. The claustrophobic city has been building more walls to keep them out from where they don’t belong. Higher towers to not hear them, smell them, but always keep an eye on them. But they didn’t account for you.
Progression (Steam description)
Everything is earned. This is not a power fantasy. You are no hero with powers. Instead, you must rely solely on improving your own planning and skill. Leverage knowledge to your advantage. Your tools and mind are your ultimate weapons. You can sloppily wield a broadsword if it comes to that, but a master thief is as a ghost. Feel the reward of your own skills improving. As you acquire intel and lore, it assists you in seeing new methods and approaches, and secrets hidden in plain sight to use to your advantage. Learn recipes and components to prepare new effects and expand your workshop.

So…
Project Shadowglass is currently in an early stage of development, so we should not get too excited just yet. BUT, it must be said that, according to the roadmap on its Official Website, we may have an Alpha Demo as early as 2026, which will include a first playable mission, and probably also a first Beta Testing phase this same year, in which community feedback will be reflected. If everything continues according to plan, the full release is scheduled for some point in 2027. Obviously you can find all the links below as always, so we recommend you keep an eye on it. And while we wait, how about stopping by the comments and telling us what you think about this wonderful proposal from Starhelm Studios? You know gamer, we’ll be reading you! 😉
