Fallout Bakersfield – A Doom Total Conversion!

We all know that DOOM has made history. Wherever it’s mentioned, every reference to the legendary game places it in a position of honor when it comes to action games and first-person shooters. In fact, thanks to the talent of John Carmack, John Romero and their whole team, that old graphics engine from 1993 has served as the base for countless modifications and conversions of other games like Castlevania, Zelda, Splatterhouse or Star Wars, in the form of the well-known WADs that were always so within our reach.

In this case, it’s the turn of another legendary franchise from a different genre: Fallout. This initiative is the work of Alexander Berezin, better known on social media as Red888Guns, together with Denis Berezin, and it’s being carried out on the basis of GZDoom. The project is currently at 60% of its development, and although according to its creators it’s not really necessary, we can support it voluntarily through Boosty. If you want to get an idea of how well this work by passionate fans is coming along, check out the trailer we’ve left for you below:

A Mod We Didn’t Know We Needed

Actually, here it doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of Fallout or DOOM, or if you simply like first-person action or RPG games and enjoy the retro style of many works of art both current and from the past, the fact is, Fallout Bakersfield seems to have something for every taste. This hybrid experience between FPS and RPG shows a graphic style so charming and impressive that it’s hard to believe that underneath all that there’s a WAD like the ones we used to modify almost thirty years ago. We’re talking about a complete tribute in every sense that will especially fascinate those of us who enjoyed the early days of the role-playing saga created by Interplay and Black Isle.

The level of dedication put into it is impressive. From the interface with the text box, the ammo, the health points or the equipped weapon, to the iconic button to open the Pip-Boy, or the VATS-style aiming, with the addition of the character’s face in the middle in classic DOOM style, everything in this conversion seems to be made specifically to delight us and bring out smiles of nostalgia or joy from the first minute.

Now then, we’re clear that the project is still in development, and maybe that’s why in the video that comes with this article we’ve only seen ghouls and feral ghouls, and maybe a super mutant toward the end, but we can’t deny that the work done so far looks fantastic already. Both the key scenarios of the original Fallout wasteland and the weapons already well-known to everyone, like the 9mm pistol, the flamer or the plasma pistol, Bakersfield has everything any nostalgic fan could expect from this emotional blend. Want to try it?… Uff… who wouldn’t?

So…

This ambitious and passionate project by Alexander and Denis Berezin doesn’t yet have an official release date, but we’ll definitely be following it closely through their official social media and news channels like IGN. Without a doubt it’ll manage to make more than one of us shed a tear of emotion, which the trailer alone already does quite easily… right? That said, and since we have to wait, it’d be great if you could drop by the comments and leave us your opinion about this tremendous tribute to old-school sagas with which many of us grew up, or in my case enjoyed already in my 20s XD. You know gamer, we’ll be reading you! 😉
